In Korea society, there are rites of passage that are expected of everyone. Examples include the way people get hitched, have kids, and become homeowners at a certain age. Getting married forms the basis for creating a new family and raising children. It was therefore considered the most important. However, more and more young people these days have been deciding not to tie the knot. It has even led to a new term, ‘singletons,’ being coined. These people might date, but they do not feel the need to get married. They focus on the negative aspects of married life and decide to live alone. This way of thinking completely changes the traditional concept of a family. In the long run, it could have a major impact on society.

한국 사회에는 누구에게나 기대되는 통과 의례라는 것이 있다. 나이가 찰 경우, 결혼, 출산, 내집 마련 등의 과정들이 그러한 좋은 예들이 된다. 그중에서도 결혼은 새로운 가족을 만들고 아이를 키우는 근간이 되기 때문에, 가장 중요한 것 중 하나였다. 그러나 최근에는 이러한 결혼 자체를 하지 않겠다고 마음먹은 젊은이들이 증가하고 있다. 소위 ‘비혼족’이라는 말이 생겨났을 정도이다. 이들은 연애는 하더라도, 결혼할 필요성에 대해서는 느끼지 못한다. 결혼의 부정적인 면들을 부각하며 아예 혼자 살기로 마음 먹은 사람들이다. 이는 가족에 대한 정통적인 개념을 아예 바꾸는 생각이라서, 장기적으로 사회에 적지 않은 영향을 미칠 수도 있다.
