There are many cases in which large-scale databases of customers’ personal information are hacked, causing serious damage. Hacked personal information is used for marketing, or used in identity theft crimes. Individuals can be hit without even knowing that their personal information is being used. On the government level, personal information protection laws have been beefed up continuously. Measures to ban the collection of resident registration numbers are part of these efforts. The government has also made it mandatory to seek consent when requiring personal information. However, a lot of personal information is still vulnerable. Individuals and the authorities must all make further efforts to protect personal information.

모든 것이 디지털화되어 있는 요즘 세상에서 개인 정보를 보호하는 것은 중요하다. 고객들의 개인 정보가 대규모로 보관되어 있는 데이터베이스들이 해킹에 의해 뚫려 큰 피해가 유발되는 경우가 허다하다. 이렇게 해킹된 개인 정보들은 마케팅에 활용이 되거나, 신원 도용 범죄 등에 사용된다. 개개인들은 본인의 개인 정보가 사용되는지도 모르게 피해를 입을 수도 있다. 정부 차원에서도 개인 정보 보호법을 꾸준히 강화해 왔다. 이제는 주민등록번호를 취합하지 못하게 한 조치도 그러한 노력의 일환이다. 또한 개인 정보를 요구할 때, 동의를 꼭 구하게 절차를 의무화한 것도 그렇다. 그러나 아직도 보안이 취약한 상태로 보관되는 개인 정보들이 수없이 많다. 개인 정보 보호를 위해 기인들도 더욱 노력을 해야 하고, 관계 당국의 노력도 더 필요하다.
