In Korea, May is called family month, and it is packed to the rafters with special days. May 5th is Children’s Day. It’s a day when parents give gifts to their young kids, and they go on family outings together. Theme parks and amusement parks are swarming with families. This year, May 5th falls on a Saturday, so Monday, May 7th has been designated as a substitute holiday. People can enjoy the long weekend. May 8th is Parents’ Day. On this day, children express their gratitude toward their parents. They give gift like carnations or hand-written letters. More often than not, they enjoy family meals together. May 15th is Teachers’ Day. Students thank their teachers. Adults also visit teachers from their school days. Other red-letter days in May include Buddha’s Birthday, Coming-of-Age Day, and Spouses’ Day.

한국에서 5월은 가정의 달로 부르며, 특별한 기념일이 많은 달이다. 5월 5일은 어린이날이다. 이날은 부모들이 어린 자녀들에게 선물을 주고 즐거운 가족 나들이를 가는 날이다. 놀이고원이나 유원지 등은 가족 단위로 놀러 나온 사람들로 인산인해를 이룬다. 올해는 5월 5일이 토요일이라 5월 7일 월요일에 대체 공휴일로 지정이 되어서, 긴 연휴를 즐길 수 있다. 5월 8일은 어버이날이다. 이날은 자녀들이 부모님에게 감사의 뜻을 전하는 날이다. 카네이션이나 손 글씨로 쓴 편지를 선물로 드리고, 대개는 오붓하게 가족끼리 식사를 한다. 5월 15일은 스승의 날이다. 이날은 학생들이 선생님들에게 감사함을 전한다. 성인들 역시 학창 시절 스승을 찾아가서 인사를 드린다. 그 밖에 5월의 특별한 기념일로는 석가탄신일, 성년의 날, 부부의 날이 있다.
