Talk about volunteering in Korean society.
Korean people often take part in volunteer work. Surveys show that roughly 10 percent of all Koreans volunteered last year. Volunteers do the work out of the goodness of their hearts. They have no ulterior motive. They just want to lend a helping hand. These days, however, volunteer work can give people a competitive edge when they apply for college or try to find a job. Bonus points are given to people who have done volunteer work. As a result, many schools encourage students to volunteer. I am glad that so many people in Korea engage in volunteer work. It gives me hope that Korea has a bright future.

한국 사회의 자원봉사 활동에 대해 이야기해 주세요.
한국 사람들은 자주 봉사활동에 참여한다. 설문에 의하면 작년에 모든 한국인 중 대략 10%가 자원봉사를 했다. 자원봉사자들은 진심 어린 선의를 가지고 일을 한다. 다른 속셈은 없다. 그저 도움을 주고 싶은 것뿐이다. 하지만 요즘은 봉사활동이 대학을 지원하거나 일자리를 구할 때 경쟁에서 혜택을 주기도 한다. 봉사활동을 한 사람들에게는 가산점이 부여된다. 그 결과 많은 학교들이 학생들에게 봉사를 하도록 장려한다. 나는 한국에서 이렇게 많은 사람들이 봉사활동에 참여해서 기쁘다. 한국의 미래가 밝다는 희망을 심어 준다.
