Talk about MVNO phones in Korea.
There are three major telecommunication companies in Korea. Almost everyone uses their mobile phones with these three mobile carriers. Recently, the government put into effect a program to cut down on household communication expenses. This is called the mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) system. These companies borrow the communication networks of the 3 major mobile carriers to provide low-cost plans for customers. The trade-off for the low fees is that there are no additional member services. The quality of service is also a little lower. Although these shortcomings exist, more and more people are using the MVNO system because lower mobile fees are an advantage. In particular, many people are getting these phones for their elderly parents who only make calls and don’t use the Internet or additional services.

한국에는 3대 이동통신사가 있다. 거의 모든 국민들이 이들 3사의 핸드폰을 쓰고 있다. 최근에 정부는 가계 통신비 절감을 위한 제도를 도입했다. 이를 알뜰폰 제도라고 한다. 관련 기업들이 3대 이동통신사로부터 통신망을 빌려 고객이 저렴한 요금제를 이용할 수 있게 제공한다. 요금이 저렴한 대신 멤버십 부가 서비스는 제공이 되지 않는다. 서비스 품질도 다소 떨어진다. 이러한 단점들이 존재하기는 하지만, 통신 요금을 저렴하게 이용할 수 있다는 장점 때문에 점점 더 많은 사람들이 알뜰폰을 이용하고 있다. 특히, 전화 통화 이외에 인터넷이나 기타 부가 서비스는 이용하지 않는 고령층 부모님에게 이러한 폰을 사 드리는 자녀들이 많아지고 있다.
