In Korea, the family name comes first, and the given name comes second. Often, the family elders decide on a baby’s name. Most Korean names have meanings. This is because a typical Korean name is based on Chinese characters, and each character has a meaning. For example, I have a friend whose name is Dae-Sung, Dea means “great” and Sung means “to accomplish.” Put together, my friend’s name means “to accomplish great things.” It’s also common for the names of siblings to have a character in common. For example, a girl named Hyeon-Jung could have brothers named Hyeon-soo and Hyeon-Seok. There are also names that are purely Korean. One of my friends is named Nuri. Her name means “the world” in Korean.
