Marriage in Korea isn’t all about the husband and wife. Often, parents get deeply involved in the process. Parents usually have a say in choosing their children’s spouses. Parents want their son or daughter to marry a good person from an upstanding family. They think about things like the education level of the marriage partner of the social standing of their in-laws. Because of this, parents sometimes object to their children’s marriage. This can lead to heated arguments. Often, couples break up because of their parents. Even after marriage, couples go to many family gatherings. This can cause fights among couples. However, emphasis on family has many positive aspects, too. Because of close family ties, many parents love their son or daughter-in-law like their own.
