Talk about Korea’s housing culture.
Apartments are the most common form of housing in Korea. A major difference compared to western houses is that in Korea, shoes are not worn indoors. This difference can be seen right away at the front door. There is a separate area where the shoes are taken off. Bathrooms are also very different. In western homes, only the bathtub or shower booth gets wet. However, Korean bathroom floors typically have tiles. It’s okay for the floor to get wet. The water goes down through a floor drain. This makes it easy to clean the bathroom or wash clothes by hand. Perhaps the most unique aspect of housing in Korea is heating. There are what’s called ondol floors, which refer to floors that are heated by hot water pipes underneath.

아파트는 한국에서 가장 흔한 주거 형태다. 서양의 집들과 비교했을 때 큰 차이는 한국에서는 실내에서 신발을 신지 않는다는 점이다. 이러한 차이는 현관에서 바로 볼 수 있다. 신발을 벗는 별도의 공간이 있다. 화장실도 많이 다르다. 서양 집에서는 욕조나 샤워 부스만 젖게 되어 있다. 하지만 한국의 화장실 바닥에는 보통 타일이 깔려 있다. 바닥이 젖어도 무관하다. 물은 바닥 배수구로 빠진다. 이렇게 함으로써 화장실 청소나 손빨래가 쉬워진다. 아마도 한국의 주택에서 가장 독특한 측면은 난방일 것이다. ‘온돌’ 바닥이라고 불리는 것이 있는데, 이는 아래에 있는 온수 배관에 의해 난방이 되는 바닥을 뜻한다.
